Christmas time is usually the time of year when family portraits consist of magical frost-covered everything, cozy parkas and fur-lined boots. But in Malibu? We go to the beach and get our bare feet in the Pacific 365 days a year. Check out this sweet family of four on their Christmas vacation to Malibu, CA. (PS daddy-o is my brother Peter!)
Natalie Backman is one part gumby, one part philosopher, and all dynamo yoga teacher, based in sunny southern California. She's one of my favorite people to shoot because she's like the Audrey Hepburn of yoga—exquisitely beautiful and photogenic and spunky but also soulful and authentic and down to earth.
You may recognize Natalie from her wine country wedding to the dreamy Ivo >> Who says you have to wait until you're a senior in high school or getting engaged to get awesome photos made?!? For Lily's tenth birthday, mama Michelle had a brilliant idea: snap some beautiful portraits of this incredible stage in Lily's life. I love the way these photos capture the half-girl-half-woman stage, where she's playful and beautiful, sporty and sweet, silly and captivating, uncertain and unhindered.
And at the end of the session, after the sunset, she INSISTED that we snap some photos of her getting soaked up to her belly button in the waves of the Pacific Ocean—jeans and all. Every photo in this set seems to capture a different side of Lily, a different emotion, and different thought, and I had the best time snapping and editing these special memories! Love this idea? Got a ten-year-old in your life that would love a portrait session? Junya and Yuki eloped in Los Angeles, but they wanted some photos to commemorate the start of their married life together. They picked El Matador—smart choice—as the backdrop to these sweet sunset portraits, which they will treasure for years to come.
Location: El Matador State Beach Stacy and Mark are getting married this spring and I'm so excited to document their special day! For now though, we spent a beautiful fall evening chasing the sunset at El Matador Beach. These two lovebirds are so excited to spend the rest of their lives together and it shows!
I always wondered what it would be like to photograph photographers. Now I can say—it's amazing!! Grant and Sarah are both mega-talented photographers in their own right. Like me, they shoot weddings and events in Southern California. Not only was it a huge honor for them to ask me to document their engagement and wedding (no doubt they have a long list of other photographers they know), but it was SO much fun to spot backgrounds and imagine the shot together with them. This shoot felt like a collaboration of minds, rather than me running around bossing my subjects around. Thank you so much, Grant and Sarah, for being so lovely and creative and so gosh darn cute together. STOKED to shoot your wedding (spoiler alert: beach elopement) this summer!
It's been so fun to watch the Potter family grow in numbers and in age over the last few years! It seems like Lincoln gets MORE ocean-obsessed with every passing day. For these photos we headed down to El Matador State Beach for a quick mini-session to document this special moment in the Potter family's life together.
El Matador Beach is always great for a fun senior session. Lots of rocks to sit, stand, lean on. And it's always my favorite when Mom jumps into a few!!
Jake and Tawni are college friends turned card-game rivals turned sweethearts. Spend five minutes with them and it's obvious they're best friends and love every second together, whether it's a surf sesh, a grocery shopping date, or a car ride to work together. They're getting married in May at Jake's family's ranch, and they wanted to commemorate their Malibu love story with this engagement session at the iconic El Matador State Beach.
We rock-hopped, we cave-explored, we got a little wave-splashed, and we had the best time! |
