I recently moved (for part of the year) to Texas, and this shoot was a first: the first time a guy has showed up wearing a cowboy hat as part of his outfit. And this couple rocked it. On a magical misty afternoon in October, Robert proposed to Katie on an overlook at Leo Carillo State Beach, above the crashing waves of the Pacific. It's always so much fun to shoot a proposal, because I get to be part of the excited planning moments. Robert and I scouted out the spot and talked through time of day and where I would hide; who would arrive and when. He poured so much thought into the details of his proposal and the words he shared with Katie, and when the moment came... it was even better than he could have planned!
I'm so excited for Robert and Katie to spend the rest of their lives together. Finding your person in this big world is a priceless gift. Here's what Robert had to say about his experience working with me afterward! ★★★★★ "Cecily is the absolute best. She photographed my proposal to my then-girlfriend, now fiancee! I wanted to propose at one location, but upon scouting it ahead of time, we discovered that it was completely overrun with other couples doing proposal and engagement shoots. There was no way I could pull off the surprise there! Cecily quickly swooped in with suggestions for several alternative, more discreet locations. She even went the extra mile and coordinated some perfect weather for the day of our shoot! 😄 "It honestly couldn't have gone better. Brantley decided to propose in Malibu! What a beautiful moment (and surprise) he put together for Hailey. He put so many personal touches into the day, including smuggling her favorite dress onto the trip so she would have something nice to wear for the moment. He rented the iconic Eagles Landing House in Malibu with stunning ocean views. After proposing, we shot a few photos at the house then went down to the little pocket beach on Pacific Coast Highway for more photos with the sand and waves.

How Nick kept this dreamy Malibu beach proposal a secret is beyond me! A casual California getaway (to visit family) turned into a weekend in a beach house, private chef, concert, etc., etc., etc.
Just in case you're confused about how this managed to be a surprise proposal when Trinity (the girlfriend) is obviously aware that I am there, here's the ruse: the private chef (Michelle) is a friend of mine. She *wink wink* needed some photography to update her website and invited me along to snap photos of this cute couple having a lovely dinner on a beachfront balcony. To keep the charade going, I took a lot of photos of food and the space, and also kept an eye on Nick to document the moment he took a knee tableside. After that, the ruse was up and we headed down to the beach for some sweet celebratory engagement photos before leaving the couple at the beach house to toast their futures together. What a beautiful scene and a smashing success! Congrats to Nick and Trinity.  These out-of-towners love to travel, so they planned a magical getaway to sunny Southern California to celebrate their engagement, and they remembered to book these special engagement photos while they were in town! Cheers to Alexa and Matt! Congrats on your engagement and your upcoming wedding. Come see me in Malibu on the honeymoon!
There is a lot to look forward to these days... and Matthew and Maria's wedding is one of them! I can't wait for these two to tie the knot in Mexico this spring (mezcal tasting, anyone?), but for now I just get to hang out with them as a rad engaged couple and enjoy sunset beach clifftop picnics in Malibu with them.

Steven and Contessa. Truly there's enough love here to fill the ocean and have more to spare! Steven and Contessa were on a getaway to sunny southern California and he planned a little something extra... a marriage proposal! He called me up and I helped plan the perfect surprise setup: dinner (so she would be dressed up) and a sunset drive up Pacific Coast Highway. They stopped off at the dreamy El Matador State Beach and, well, you can look through the pictures to gather the rest. Proposals are my favorite, FAVORITE, FAVORITE thing ever because this is real life! This is the good stuff.

These two are so beautiful and fun together! Grace and Kaity are getting married next fall in Santa Barbara but for now they're enjoying life as an engaged couple with their sweet pup.
