Pure Trade Projects | Online Store Product Photography | Lifestyle Photography | Malibu, CA11/8/2016
On a beautiful weekday morning, I met Jenna & Ryan, founders of Pure Trade Projects, and models Abby & Cameron in the Malibu Bluffs parking lot. They had a bag full of beautiful handmade beanies and hands full of coffee. ^^ Check out these photos in action on Pure Trade Project's website.
Another month, another beautifully styled photo shoot filled with one-of-a-kind pieces from Honey & Oak. If you haven't seen their work yet, Honey & Oak is an artist collective based in Santa Barbara, California. Each month, their artists make, find & curate pieces that will make your world a little more whimsical and beautiful.
Part location scouting opportunity, part portfolio builder, part networking time. A styled shoot is the photographer's version of a professional development day. Enjoy these images from a recent styled shoot with a bunch of camera-ready models, mind-blowing golden light, and crunchy fall leaves and grasses in Palo Comado Canyon.
I had a great time shooting October product photography for the launch of Honey & Oak, a women-owned artist collective that offers a monthly rotation of handmade, found, curated objects that fit a soulful, nature-guided theme.
Dusty and I go on lots of adventures together, but we are intentional about planning one big adventure every year. We alternate who picks the destination, and it usually pulls us to the edge of our personal and collective comfort zones—which is exactly where we fell in love in the first place. This year I got to pick, and I chose climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. At 19,341 feet, Mt. Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa, earning it a spot on the list of the "Seven Summits" (the tallest mountain on each continent, a bucket list accomplishment for individuals who really like checklists). I've climbed Kilimanjaro once before, in 2009 with a girlfriend, but it's something I've always wanted to share with Dusty. And like I always say, anything worth doing is worth doing twice. It is illegal to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro without hiring a guide, so our first step was to select a guide service. We booked with Tanzania on Foot, our head guide was Alex, and our assistant guide was Patrick. We chose the 5-day Marangu Route, also known as The Coca-Cola Route, because it's the most popular route for tourists, due to it's brevity. (Most other routes up Kilimanjaro are 6- or even 7-day routes, allowing more time for acclimation and better summit odds.) Going into the climb, we knew that choosing a 5-day itinerary would hurt our chances of summiting (Marangu's 5-day itinerary has about a 50% summit rate), but our travel schedule was tight and only allowed for five days. We decided to risk it. As we packed and agonized over every little cubic centimeter of our backpacks, one of the major questions we kept asking (and googling) was, "What should we wear to hike?... and sleep?... and on summit day?" Every hiker knows that gear selection can be a stress-inducing process, and this was one such case. Hence, the inspiration for the series title. For each day, I'll break down what I (and sometimes Dusty) wore and when and why (and what we might have done differently). I'll also provide other information as it pertains to our story (and your Kili aspirations). My hope is this series of articles comes in handy to some other Kilimanjaro hopeful somewhere along the way. Catch up with the rest of the story by jumping to >> DAY 1 DAY 2 DAY 3 DAY 4 DAY 5 ...and as always, please don't hesitate to email me (cecily.breeding@gmail.com) with additional questions.
I've known Jen & Cyrus for years. From working together at lululemon Calabasas with Jen, to photographing their incredible sunrise wedding, and now to watching them bring a daughter into the world, I have loved watching their lives unfold in beautiful chapters. These photos capture a moment in time at their new home, with Violet Vaughan at twelve days old. It was a joy to capture every detail, from her full head of hair and perfect little fingers and toes to the beautiful color and light of the new baby room. Not only is Jen an incredible new (yet totally relaxed and confident) mom, she is also a gifted writer. Over the course of the past several months, she blogged updates about her pregnancy and the joys and surprises that came with it. Jen's blog is a great source of wisdom as Jen shares her pursuit of a smaller, slower life in the midst of this sometimes chaotic world. Like these? Shoot me an email (cecily.breeding@gmail.com) and let's set up a portrait session.
After the Holy Yoga Retreat, Heather and I took a little detour up the 64 north to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Being early May in the high desert, we naturally got a spectacular sunset, followed by a night of rain and a morning of snow. After having breakfast at the historic El Tovar Hotel (Polenta Corn Hot Cakes with Prickly Pear-Pistachio Butter), we headed for the Hoover Dam, because who doesn't want to see the world's longest concrete arch?
They say home is where the heart is, and in this case, I'd say they were right. I happen to be related to the subjects of this Wednesday-morning-at-home shoot (Mama Rachel is my big sister!), so they were willing to let me show up during breakfast time and just capture what I saw. And boy, I saw a lot.... I saw smiles and laughter and see-food and morning light and Dr. Seuss and chickens and lilacs and Midnight the cat and Macarius' bicycle and a whole lotta love passed from heart to heart and hand to hand. I left my family that morning with a full memory card and an even fuller heart.
I think what I love most about this shoot are the little bursts of reality sprinkled throughout—like that smear of God knows what on Macarius' chin from breakfast (my guess is egg yolk), or Juliana's little green undies peaking out above her skirt, or Lucius rocking the diaper, or Rachel's just-showered hair. I'm not a parent myself, but if I were, these are the details I would want frozen in time. These are the things I would store up in my heart. So please scroll down to enjoy a real morning at the Barnard home, in all it's raw perfection.
